Aimee Sadler was in town this month showing the staff & volunteers at Jackson County Animal Shelter how to run doggie playgroups. She focused on dog social styles and how to match compatible dogs.
There are roughly five dog social styles according to Aimee (and – can you tell which one your dog has?)
Dog Social – really enjoys the company of other dogs. Is easy going and tolerant of various types of dog social styles. These dogs tend to be puppies and young adults.
Dog Tolerant – well socialized and relaxed around other dogs, enjoys dogs he knows, but generally, will not seek out unfamiliar dogs. Most adult dogs fall into this category.
Dog Selective – has dog friends, but may dislike certain types of dogs and is intolerant of rude behavior. Can sometimes show “dog aggressive” behavior.
Dog Defensive – these dogs are playful with some, but reactive to dogs that challenge. They tend to react out of fear and by snapping, lunging and vocalizing.
Dog Aggressive – not able to play with or tolerate other dogs. They will choose to fight rather than avoid tense situations. These dogs should always be on leash when outside the home and never go to dog parks.
