Helping Your Holy Terror

Do you have a holy terror – I mean terrier?  You know if you do:

  • Barks first – asks questions later
  • Terror on leash
  • Sees squirrels, cats or dogs and will bark! Bark! Bark!
  • Visitors to your house?  What a Barking Bonanza!

Here are some tips for you and your little terror:

HUNTING GAMES: terriers love to hunt. Set up a hunting course in your house or yard by hiding furry, squeaky toys. Show your dog the toys first, and then hide them. No peeking! Next, let your your terrier out to hunt for them.  (You’ll need to teach him “find-it!”).  Or, you can take him on a BARN HUNT! see  article…

WAIT/OK!: this is an important impulse control exercise and you should be using it everyday.  Useful in the car, at the front door and at the dog park.

STAY: again, this is a great impulse control exercise. If you can get a terrier to stay while you are tossing toys around or running or jumping up and down you have won half the battle!

WATCH ME/LOOK: This is soooo useful for the leash walking barky dog! Get and hold a treat over that little dog nose and count to 10 before delivering. This is the first step in learning to control your loud mouthed little dog.

Try one or all of these to help get control over your cute but fuzzy Hellion & you’ll be so glad you did…
